This was
the terminus of the Rhymney Railway branch that went to
Cwmbargoed, Bedlinog and Nelson. The station was situated behind
the Antelope Hotel (which still stands) on Dowlais High Street.
The line was used heavily by the Dowlais Iron Co. to bring in
the imported iron ore and send out the finished goods. (see zig-zag lines
on slip road pics).The
station closed in 1964.Up until then Dowlais people could catch a train
to Cardiff from there via Nelson, Ystrad Mynach and Caerphilly.
