River Taff - Aberfan Near Perthygleision - Early 1900s

Coracles used in the search for a drowned boy.

Clive Davies of Penydarren sends a story to us about this photograph;

  The sad death of Cromwell Davies, who fell into the river Taff and drowned and the coracle men from Carmathern came with their boats strapped to their backs and recovered the body of the young boy. This sad tale also tells that at a time when all a man had was his wages, miners from the pit gave up their wages to help (albeit unsuccessfully) to search for the body. This poor lad is buried at the Aberfan Cemetery.

By Muriel Davies.

John Thomas sent us this Headway February 1972 Newsletter by the  Aberfan and Merthyr Vale Community Association (Click on to Enlarge)
